Panavision is an odd company. They are the premier supplier of video equipment, hands down. When you rent from Panavision, you don’t just get the camera, but all the accessories necessary on a modern video shoot. Not only do most big-budget films use their equipment, but when we went to pick our stuff up for a test run this past weekend, major TV shows were filling trucks full of camera gear for use in various places across the country (it’s pilot season in LA).

Panavision doesn’t sell cameras. Their HD camera is built on a Sony base, but all the parts, and in particular, the lenses, are constructed in house. You can only use them as rentals.

Talk about proprietary hardware. Of course, people put up with that because Panavision makes the best hardware, and the care and feeding of these beasts can be pretty complicated. Panavision is an example of outsourcing institutionalized. Production companies leave it to Panavision to care for the gear as well as push it to the next level (the specs on the next-generation Panavision camera, the Genesis system, are pretty impressive), leaving them free to concentrate on the 1000 other issues associated with a video production.

Panavision cameras feel like quality, as a 60 pound camera clearly should. Of course, the weight does change somewhat the kinds of things you can do. I can go handheld, with a bit of assistance, if I have the smaller zoom lens attached. The big telephoto creature (which is shown in the photo) would crush me like a bug in handheld settings.

Anyway, I’m sacrificing eight weekends for the shooting of this film. The Panavision HD camera makes it 100 times more interesting because, as I mentioned to our sound mixer who scoffed at the notion that I would have no interest in learning the traditional film process, HD is the future. Most editing is already done digitally, which means traditional film has to be converted, or “telecined,” to digital video. Removing that step in the process, not to mention reducing the complexity associated with a traditional film shoot, saves sets money.

Granted, most crews, and most video experts, know the traditional film process backwards and forwards. However, more consumers buying HD-capable TV sets, and the growing importance of the home theater market (a market which will soon have HD-capable DVD players, whether HD-DVD or BluRay), puts pressure on film productions to use HD from start to finish. Kodak knows its in trouble, and given the number of digital cameras I saw being loaded at Panavision, I should the think the industry will see the writing on the wall.

Mark Cuban has spoken out on Google’s acquisition of YouTube and thinks Google is crazy and has landed itself in a field of litigation landmines.  Cuban was quoted last month saying that only a “moron” would purchase YouTube and he may have a point.  Cuban certainly knows a bad deal (good deal depending on whose perspective) when he sees one since he himself pulled off a 5.7 billion dollar sale of broadcast.com to Yahoo in the height of the dotcom boom and laughed his way to the bank.  Considering the fact that broadcast.com had nowhere near the user base and earning power of YouTube, one could see the 1.65 billion dollar sale of YouTube as a bargain.  YouTube has so far avoided any serious litigation, but that was before there was anyone with deep pockets to sue and Google certainly has deep pockets.

Mark Cuban is almost certain that Google will be in trouble and writes.

“Could Fox, the owner of Myspace put GooTube in a huge hole by being legally aggressive and going after every video of Stewy from Family Guy , American Idol, any of their TV shows”

However, Mark Cuban being the smart business man that he is hedged his bet and tells us his contingency plan if Google gets off relatively easy with the lawsuits.

“Well, I’m ready for that too. I went ahead and registered http://www.effingreat.com because thats how much fun its going to be using Filesanywhere.com features to support a “load everything you own and share it with world” website.

I will host in the same way as Youtube and Google. Upload in the same, dont ask, dont tell approach. I will sell ads however they do. Preroll, or adsense or whatever.

Only i will expand the storage beyond 100mbs and will open it up to books, term papers, pictures, movies, music, articles, anything and everything that can be digitized. I will add the appropriate disclaimers and provide a cool social networking interface. Maybe something like Goowy.Com or maybe something like Flixster.com. I mean, why not ? What could be cooler User Generated Content than the termpaper you wrote on Daniel Boone ? Or what could be more interesting than scanning in a book you wanted to give to someone and just posting it ? And dang, just wholesale upload all of your MP3s.”

Microsoft said its new online search portal will feature an improved user interface that fetches more accurate Web search results.

In addition, Live Search will now power MSN Search. Live.com will also be released from beta, as will Live Local Search, but only in the U.S. and U.K. They are all part of Microsoft’s new set of Internet services and software.

Though the search engine was in beta mode for a relatively short time, the company felt enough progress had been made to release it globally after examining user feedback, meeting with consumers and studying search behavior, said Derrick Connell, search business general manager. Connell called the release “a watershed moment” for Microsoft.

Live Search lets users hunt for news, images, video, blogs and RSS feeds through one search portal. The new features are intended to help simplify Internet searches, like the scoping bar on the top of the page that keeps the information from a previous search so the next search is done in the context of the first.

Microsoft said its new Web search will return with more precise results faster. Prior to the latest version of Live Search, the average search from query to final results took 11 minutes, Connell said. And half the time, those searches ended fruitlessly. That happened when users clicked on a link, refined the query, and not finding what they needed, gave up, he said. “For a large population of searchers, they want to run a query and get the answer they need” right away.

The new “related searches” feature on the right side of the screen uses an algorithm that utilizes the previous queries and results of others who performed the same search. Another Web results improvement runs a search on the contents of the destination site, eliminating the need to use the site’s own search function, which is almost never as powerful as a major search engine.

Microsoft also improved the image search process. Connell said the company’s research showed more than half of users would click “next” when perusing search results, meaning the image they were looking for did not appear in the first batch of results. He says they’ve solved that problem by putting all image query results on a single page with a slider bar that controls the size of thumbnails.

Local searches account for 15 percent to 20 percent of online queries, said Connell. Using the Virtual Earth platform, the new local search function lets users see cities from a 45-degree “bird’s-eye view” of a particular place on a map. Instead of an overhead view you get with an aerial map, it gives an angled perspective on locations like downtown Seattle or the Statue of Liberty in New York. The mapping feature currently covers 30 percent of the U.S. and 100 cities worldwide.
